The Pendleton Heights Lady Arabian softball team defeated Greenfield-Central, 5-1, on Wednesday night to claim the IHSAA Sectional #9 crown. The championship was the first sectional title for Pendleton Heights since 2013.
Greenfield-Central struck first with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first inning. The Cougars then followed with a double. After the initial two hits, Pendleton Heights pitcher, Audrey Ricker, settled in and kept the Cougars off balance the remainder of the game.
With the score tied 1-1 in the top of the 7th inning, the Arabians used back-to-back squeeze plays and some Greenfield-Central errors to break the game open by scoring 4 runs in the final inning.
Ricker was the winning pitcher and Jade Mollenkopf, Kelsey Sturgeon, and Ashley King led the Arabians offensively.
With the win, Pendleton Heights will host the IHSAA Regional on Tuesday, May 31st, at 7:00 PM. The Arabians will play the winner of Mount Vernon and Cathedral. The Marauders and Irish are scheduled to play their championship on Thursday night.
